Caravan Detailing Guide for Grey Nomads Travelling Through Cairns

You've just driven 1,700 kilometres up the Bruce Highway. Maybe you came from Brissy. Maybe from further south. Either way, your caravan has copped the full outback assault — bugs, road grime, red dust, and a few thousand kilometres of vibration rattling everything that can rattle.

Welcome to Cairns. You've earned a rest. So has your van.

Welcome to Cairns — Your Van Deserves a Rest Too

Cairns is the turnaround point for thousands of grey nomads every year. Whether you're stopping for a week or settling in for a few months, this is the perfect time to give your rig a proper clean and inspection. You've probably been living in it for weeks — it's due.

We see a lot of caravans and motorhomes roll into Cairns looking absolutely battle-worn. Bug splatter welded to the front. Red dust in every crevice. That slightly musty smell inside that you've stopped noticing because you've been in there for three weeks straight.

It all comes off. Every bit of it.

What Long-Distance Travel Does to Caravans

Driving a caravan from southern states to Cairns puts your rig through a specific set of punishments. Here's what we typically find:

  • Bug splatter bonded to paint. Especially the front panel, A-frame, and gas bottle covers. Bugs that hit at 100km/h and then bake in Queensland sun for days become almost impossible to remove with just a sponge and water. The acid in insect remains can etch paint if left too long.
  • Road grime and bitumen spots. The underside and lower panels collect spray from the road surface, especially after rain between Townsville and Cairns. You'll often see a line of tar spots running along the bottom edge.
  • Red dust infiltration. If you've come via the inland route or taken any unsealed detours, red dust gets into everything — window tracks, door seals, roof vents, and all through the interior.
  • Stone chips. The Bruce Highway isn't gentle. Small stone chips on the front panel and A-frame are common. These need sealing before they rust.
  • Awning mould. If your awning was packed away damp at any point during the trip (it happens), mould spores are already growing in there. You just can't see them yet.

Interior Refresh After Weeks on the Road

Living in a caravan full-time means the interior gets a workout that a regular house never would. Everything is condensed — cooking, sleeping, showering, and living all in 20 square metres. After a few weeks, it needs a proper reset.

What We Focus On

  • Upholstery deep clean. Seat cushions, mattress toppers, and any fabric surfaces absorb body oils, cooking smells, and humidity. We use hot water extraction to pull all of that out.
  • Kitchen and bathroom sanitise. These areas get grimy fast in a caravan. We deep clean every surface — benchtops, sink, shower recess, and toilet area.
  • Floor and carpet extraction. Sand, dirt, and dust that gets tracked in over weeks of travel. Even if you've been sweeping daily, there's always more embedded in the carpet or mat fibres.
  • Window tracks and seals. Red dust and road grime love to accumulate in window tracks. We clean every track and check seals for damage that could let water in during Cairns' wet season.
  • Odour treatment. That "lived-in" smell is real. We use ozone treatment to neutralise odours throughout the entire interior — not just mask them with air freshener.

Exterior: Oxidation, Awnings, and Seals

Caravan exteriors take a beating that's different to cars. The panels are often fibreglass or aluminium composite, the surface area is massive, and they're exposed to UV and weather from every angle.

Oxidation Removal

If your van has a gelcoat or painted fibreglass exterior, UV exposure from driving across Queensland can cause oxidation — the paint goes chalky and dull. We use a machine polish specifically suited to caravan panel materials to cut through the oxidation and restore gloss. On a typical van, we'll spend 3–4 hours on the exterior alone.

Awning Cleaning

Roll-out awnings collect mould, mildew, bird droppings, and tree sap. We extend the awning fully, treat any mould spots with a specialised cleaner, scrub the entire fabric, and let it dry completely before rolling it back up. Rolling a damp awning away is how mould starts — we make sure it's bone dry.

Seal Inspection

While we're cleaning, we check door seals, window seals, and roof seals for cracking or separation. Cairns' wet season dumps serious rain — between 1,500 and 2,000mm per year — and a failed seal means water getting inside your walls. We'll flag anything that looks like it needs resealing so you can get it sorted before the storms hit.

Salt Air Protection on the Coast

If you're staying at a beachside caravan park — and in Cairns, many of the best parks are right on the coast at places like Palm Cove, Trinity Beach, or Yorkeys Knob — salt air is constantly settling on your van's exterior.

Salt is corrosive. It accelerates oxidation on paint and gelcoat, attacks metal fittings and hinges, and can start corrosion on chassis components within weeks if not managed. We apply a protective sealant to the exterior after detailing that creates a barrier against salt deposits. It won't last forever, but it buys you months of protection during your coastal stay.

Quick tip: rinse your van down with fresh water once a week while parked at the coast. Even a basic garden hose rinse removes surface salt before it can do damage. Takes 10 minutes.

Pre-Departure Prep

When it's time to head out — whether you're going up to Cape Tribulation, across to the Atherton Tablelands, or starting the long drive south — a pre-departure detail sets you up right.

  • Protective wax or sealant on the exterior to handle the next leg's bugs, grime, and weather.
  • Interior sanitise and freshen so you're starting the next stretch with a clean slate.
  • Awning check — make sure it's clean, dry, and properly stored.
  • Seal check — everything tight before you hit the road again.
  • Window and mirror clean — clear visibility for the drive ahead.

Think of it as a service for your living space, not just your vehicle. You maintain the engine before a big drive — your interior and exterior deserve the same.

Why Mobile Detailing Is Perfect for Caravans

Here's the thing about caravan detailing: you can't exactly drop your rig off at a car wash. Most detailing shops don't accommodate caravans and motorhomes — they're too big, they need too much space, and the work takes a full day.

That's exactly why mobile detailing makes sense. We come to you — to your caravan park, your campsite, or wherever you're set up. No need to unhitch, tow to a shop, and wait around. We bring everything we need: water, power, extraction equipment, polishers, and cleaning products.

Most caravan parks in Cairns are happy for us to work on-site as long as we're tidy about it (which we are — we carry our own water capture systems). We've detailed vans at parks from Palm Cove to Edmonton and everywhere in between.

When to Book: Grey Nomad Season

Grey nomad season in Cairns runs roughly from May to September — the dry season, when the weather is perfect and the caravans roll in from all over Australia. This is our busiest period for caravan work, and spots fill up fast.

If you're planning to be in Cairns during this window, we'd recommend booking your detail within a few days of arriving. That way you get the road grime off early and enjoy a clean rig for the rest of your stay. Waiting until the last week before you leave means you might miss out.

A full caravan exterior detail typically runs $250–$450 depending on size (a 16-foot pop-top is a very different job to a 25-foot tandem-axle). Interior deep clean adds $150–$300. Combined packages give you a better rate.

If you've just landed in Cairns and your rig looks like it fought every bug between here and Rockhampton, give us a call. We'll come to your park, give you a quote on the spot, and have your van looking like it did before you left home.
